Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What makes Taranaki Tallow Skincare unique?

A: Our difference lies in our source. We use 100% grass-fed beef tallow sourced directly from the Taranaki region of New Zealand, famous for its rich, volcanic soils and pristine pastures. This premium diet results in tallow that is exceptionally rich in skin-nourishing vitamins (A, D, E, K) and highly beneficial fatty acids, ensuring the highest quality base for our balms.

What is tallow and why is it beneficial for the skin?

A: Tallow is rendered beef suet (fat). It is a superior skincare ingredient because its lipid structure is remarkably similar (bio-identical) to the oils naturally produced by healthy human skin (sebum). This unique compatibility means:

  • Deep Absorption: It penetrates the skin barrier effectively, unlike many plant oils that just sit on the surface.
  • Intense Nourishment: It delivers essential fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) directly to the cells.
  • Barrier Repair: It helps restore and protect the skin's natural moisture barrier, locking in hydration.

Is tallow balm safe for sensitive skin, eczema, or psoriasis?

A: Yes, absolutely. Tallow's natural compatibility with human skin makes it incredibly gentle and often a preferred choice for people with sensitive, reactive, or compromised skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to deeply hydrate and repair the barrier can offer significant relief from the dryness, redness, and itching associated with conditions like eczema and psoriasis. We recommend starting with the Original Reviving Balm for the purest, least-scented option.

Will Tallow Balm clog my pores or feel greasy?

A: No, when applied correctly, it should not. Tallow is generally considered non-comedogenic (does not clog pores) because of its similarity to our own natural sebum. If your skin feels greasy, you are simply using too much. A pea-sized amount for the entire face is usually plenty.

How should I apply the Tallow Balms for the best results?

A: Our balms are highly concentrated, so a little goes a very long way!

  • Warm It: Scoop a tiny amount and rub it between your fingers or palms until it softens.
  • Apply to Damp Skin (Recommended): For maximum hydration, apply the balm to your face or body immediately after showering or washing your face, when your skin is still slightly damp. This helps seal in moisture.

What is the shelf life of your balms, and how should I store them?

A: Our balms are oil-based and contain no water, making them naturally stable. They have a shelf life of approximately 12 months when stored correctly. We recommend storing them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat to maintain the whipped consistency.

Does the balm smell like beef?

A: High-quality, properly rendered tallow, like ours, has a very mild, natural, and often neutral or subtly earthy scent. Our careful rendering process minimizes any natural odour. Our scented balms (like Lavender Dream) use natural essential oils that provide a lovely, calming aroma, completely masking the neutral tallow base. Our Nourish & Soothe balm smells like delicious home baking and fresh straw!
